Merlin Santana: Final Cut on Investigation Discovery

The Merlin Santana story on Final Cut that aired earlier this week highlighted the strange coincidences that came together in some sort of perfect storm that culminated with his murder. One of them being that he wasn’t even supposed to be in Los Angeles on Saturday Nov 9th, 2002 but was supposed to be in New York to visit his family but a audition at the last minute for a sitcom made him stay put.

Another coincidence Final Cut went into that the Celebrity Crime Files story didn’t was the robbery angle. Merlin’s friend Brandon Adams was the one that noticed that something wasn’t quite right about Monique King inside of the house on Crenshaw in L.A and followed her outside where he realized his suspicions were right but it was a little to late.

By the time he told Merlin something was up and they both left but encountered the killers, who were armed and shooting. Later it was determined she was most likely casing the house to be robbed.

What really gave the show legitimacy was the interview with Merlin’s mother Lea. She told the story how he was born premature and the doctors thought he wouldn’t make it. When he did in fact make it, his mother gave him special name for the miracle of his birth, Merlin.

His mother said how he loved his name and loved introducing himself to people so he could tell them what his name was. Another eerie coincidence his mother revealed happened before his death.

Celebrity Crime Files: Merlin Santana and Donald Goines

The last two episodes of Celebrity Crime Files on TV One that featured writer Donald Goines and actor Merlin Santana are fitting in what led to Merlin and Donald’s demise was basically the same thing at work, in that their sense of self was a bit skewed. And the way it manifested itself was different but destructive in both cases.

Merlin and Donald as children

Ironically Merlin’s mother saw acting for her son as a way to keep from the violence on the streets of New York City. Displaying a natural gift he had accumulated some impressive credits by the age of 16. But in many cases when a actor starts working from a young age and that’s the only thing he knows how to do, it does not end well when he tries to adjust once the jobs stop coming, which is what happened to Merlin.

For Donald born in Detroit, who had parents that were successful business owners and a mother that was always mistaken for being White a insecurity over being relentlessly teased about his appearance (light skin and eyes) the feeling of never Black enough drove him to a pain filled life of drug addiction and crime. The first incident highlighting the need to prove he was “down” was when he forged his sister’s birth certificate to join the military at the age of 15 and eventually was shipped to Korea for the war.

After a stint on Moesha, the highlight of Merlin’s career by far was the Stave Harvey show. Playing Romeo Santana he enjoyed job security for a couple of years. Having a regular role on a TV show allowed the perks of skipping the line at clubs, hanging out with Black Hollywood and trying to launch a rap music career.

For Donald after returning from Korea and bringing with him heroin addiction, he tried his hand at various things which included being a armed robber (which sent him to the pen) hustling people and most notoriously being a pimp. He couldn’t even work that hustle right due to another pimp weaseling in and stealing his women.

It was during one of his stints in the pen that he found something he could do quite well, which is writing. After reading a book by Iceberg Slim, Donald decided that he to could write about his experiences on the streets. He got rejected by every publishing house except for the one that represented Iceberg Slim. After signing the contract (it was obvious it was one that benefited the publisher) Donald started cranking out book after book.

Maia Campbell on Iyanla Fix My Life: And Shining The Spotlight On Bipolar Disorder

Two things appeared to be very apparent while watching Maia Campbell on Iyanla: Fix My Life last night that both Iyanla and Maia came off guarded like there were some more issues that the both of them were tip toeing around.

Iyanla mentioned several times throughout the episode that this episode was personal being that she knew Maia’s mother Bebe very well. And it was obvious that Iyanla knew a lot more about Maia issues relating to her and Bebe’s relationship than she let on but out of respect for her friend and Maia’s mental state wouldn’t go there.

And also how emotionally vacant and robotic Maia was, it was also mentioned several times that the bipolar meds she was currently on were responsible for Maia’s behavior.

It’s no wonder that a lot of people dealing with mental illness won’t take them for long periods, which often leads in a downward spiral. Which is what exactly happened to Maia’s life after she refused to take her medication.

The show started with a visit to the house Maia was living in with other women dealing with mental challenges. After establishing why she was on the show, (Maia was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1998) the discussion then went to her mother Bebe Moore Campbell.

One could visibly see the anger that Maia still had towards her mother for taking her daughter away. And also over “they” for not letting her speak to her mother as she was dying. Iyanla let her know that both of these things occurred because she was deep in her addiction.

On top of bipolar disorder, Maia revealed that her she never felt support from her mother or father and always felt that she was expected to fail.

During the scenes in the Matrix Theater, where Iyanla wanted her to act out various parts of her life according to the picture, Maia didn’t seem to grasp what the exercise was about until she got past the childhood one to the one of her mother.

Maia started telling her mother the things she didn’t get a chance to say, like how she felt she was never good enough and how she couldn’t be what her mother wanted her to be.

Jam Master Jay Murder Mystery: Episode 4 of Celebrity Crime Files= Disappointing

The Ultimate Halloween Murder Mystery is back with the still unsolved murder of Jam Master Jay back in the news to mark the 10 anniversary of the murder that happened on Oct 30th, 2002. And out of the four episodes of Celebrity Crime Files On TV One that have aired so far the Jam Master Jay and the Marvin Gaye episodes are by far the weakest.

Jay’s in particular came off more like a biography episode that spent more time on his career accomplishments and then rushed through and glossed over the circumstances surrounding his murder.

jmj-1

But one thing rung crystal clear, JMJ’s murder sounds like a set up and a inside job because when killers strike they have a tendency to leave no witnesses than can identify them. But it just so happens that more than one witness to the murder are still alive and have memory loss about who the killer and his accomplice are..interesting And also how did the killer know Jay was inside the studio that particular night…unless he got tipped off by someone with Jay.

jmj-2

What makes things even more suspect is that the killer & accomplice was someone JMJ and his crew knew because when he rang the buzzer to get in his image appeared on the security monitor before he was let in by Lydia High, JMJ’s receptionist. And JMJ also had a gun with him that night, obviously he was comfortable enough with whoever killed him to not have it in his hand.

JMJ’s murder is very similar to the Lala Brown one in that it’s obvious more than one person knows exactly what happened and that there is a back story that led to both murders. And coincidentally the security footage that has the killer and his accomplice on film disappeared.

jmj-3

Celebrity Crime files only scratched the surface of the various theories (briefly mentioning the JMJ’s IRS issues) others are a drug or merchandise deal gone bad or payback for beef with drug dealers or dudes from the streets over money. But other media outlets have done a better job with this story because the account that came from…..

The Lala Brown Murder: Episode 2 of Celebrity Crime Files

Was I the only one thinking during the airing of Lala’s Brown’s story on Celebrity Crime Files, last night on TV One that a lot of things just don’t add up. Singer Yolanda “La La” Brown who was only 21 years old and her boyfriend producer JeTannue “Kool-Aid” Clayborn were murdered in 2007 at the studio they both lived in Milwaukee.

lala-and-boyfriend-kool-aidlala-and-boyfriend-kool-aid-1

Four days lapsed before the bodies were found (the police determined that they were most likely killed the same day Lala’s father dropped her off at the studio, four days previous). What I don’t get is that Kool-Aid’s studio (which was robbed twice before the murders of expensive equipment) appeared to be the kind of place people were always going in and out of. I find it very fishy that none of Lala or Kool-Aid’s friends stopped by the studio.

Lala’s Family

lala-brown-family

It finally took for Lala and Kool-Aid’s families to be concerned about their whereabouts that led to Kool-Aid’s brother discovering the crime scene (He had to break the door open to get in). Something tells me that at least one person who knew both Lala and JeTannue went by the studio, knew something was amiss but didn’t do anything.

Kool-Aid’s Studio

studio

The case is now cold and doesn’t look to be solved anytime soon. And it was also apparent that very much like Jam Master Jay’s Murder (which will be on a upcoming episode) more than one person who knew both victims knows exactly what happened. Because I get the impression that there is a back story behind the murder based off of it being one committed in anger and the multiple times Lala was shot.

6 Things About The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 5 Trailer

atl-housewives-season-5-1

1. Kenya Moore is snatching wigs:

We have seen it before when a new housewife comes on the scene, she usually falls back and defers to the other Housewives until she establishes her spot..not Kenya. It’s very obvious even from the trailer that Kenya is making sure her spot is secure for seasons 6, 7, 8..etc acting like she has been a cast member since season 1.

Sheree Who ?

And of course Kenya seems to have her share of issues with her man telling her to take her medicine, so she brings the crazy to.

2. Confirming the obvious: Phaedra is a freak

From the scene where Phaedra and the girls are in a strip club and she admires the cooch of a dancer, it seemed like Phaedra had a desire to go down and start to munch.

atl-housewives-season-5

And of course Phaedra had to show everyone what she was working with.

3. You know you are doing to much when “Mrs. talks about sex 24/7″ Kandi is repulsed

Phaedra and Apollo slobbing each other down had everyone around them making the ‘eww’ face

Especially Kandi

4. Kenya & Apollo, is that chemistry I see

Phaedra keeps Apollo on a tight leash and this season he seems to be complaining how he wants to do different things, have fun and who just so happens to be there to have fun with him but Kenya (who mentions how fine Apollo is). Phaedra looks concerned but we all know even though Apollo might think about going there with Kenya, Phaedra knows he isn’t going anywhere.
